Lots of Wind from Tropical Cyclone

February 9, 2011 00:00 UTC

45 degrees 32 minutes South

168 degrees 04 minutes West

16 Knots Speed Over Ground

Hi There,

I’m currently dealing with 40-45 knots of wind from leftover tropical cyclone ZACA. This could have been a very bad weather system, but fortunately it is dissipating quickly. The seas and wind direction is tricky. The rotation created from a tropical system creates an uneven swell from many directions as the system rotates. Also the wind direction is now steadily backing from the North to the Northwest, which will not last long as the winds will diminish in a sloppy and confused sea. It is not comfortable, but manageable.

Best from Le Pingouin,

Brad

  1. Soon to-be Happy Birthday Brad!

It is my honor, and with great pride, that I be the first to wish you (for the third time in the Southern Ocean, West of Cape Horn) a very happy birthday (February 13 th folks)!

?? If you are going East around the world, in the Southern hemisphere, arn't you getting younger?? :)

My wish for you, LP, and your three comrads at arms (and their aqua "chariots"), on "your day", is a safe, but fast passage around Cape Horn to Punta Del Este! My wish further is that your passage is a bit faster than your comrads at arms! :)

I HATE confused seas and have seen my share. Hopefully they will level out soon! GO FAST!!

  4. FYI:

The following was an email sent at 0830 EDT this morning to Chris Stanmore-Major after reading his most recent blog (02/10/2011) posted on the Velux5 Oceans Website (Chris asked that folks contact him at sea - gave his email adress in that blog. Soooo, to be obliging, the following was sent): (:>

"Greetings O English Poet of The Deep!

Hey Chris, you may be too young to remember the jingle ..."Chachita banana is hear to say, eat a banana every day, Chachita, Chachita, Chachita banana is-a-gooda for you"...! The "...is-a-gooda for you" ... part of the jingle is so your aqua chariot feels at home (given she was Giovanni's creation)! (:>

All kidding aside, I have really enjoyed all your blogs, pictures, and videos! You, my friend, are one really talented, articulate, positive, and can-do Englishman! You do "The Empire" proud! I know, the English empire spanned the globe, including an upstart young nation known as "The New World". Alas, another sea faring empire (the Dutch), also spanned the globe in those good old days, and it not only laid claim to "The New World", but many of those lands that then, and now, are the largest producers of bananas!

Now, the "banana boat" you refer to in your most recent blog is, I believe, owned, and sailed, by one Bradford Reynolds Van Liew (Brad}. It comes to me from a very reliable source, that Brad is mostly of Dutch decent! It is also know to this writer that Brad's direct line Dutch ancestors came to New Amsterdam (in "The New World") in 1645. It is also known to this writer that Brad is part English (he is also a direct descendant of Governor William Bradford of Mayflower fame - in the 1600 s as well).

So, given all this historical insight, what does it all mean? Well, as you English say ..."I will give it a go". In order of descending importance:

    1. The handle "banana boat" is appropriate!
    2. God save the Queen!
    3. IF YOUR NOT DUTCH, YOUR NOT MUCH!

God's speed to you Chris! You are a good man, and a force to be reckoned with!

    Cheers,

    Grump
